5 Pinot Noirs you need to try

Writer: Safari Wine ClubSafari Wine Club

Pinot Noir is a grape with a rich history that dates back over a thousand years, originating in Burgundy, France. Once cultivated by monks in monasteries, this grape has become one of the most prestigious yet finicky varieties.

What makes Pinot Noir so special? It's a delicate grape that requires precise care in the vineyard and cellar. One of the most unique techniques used in its production is whole-berry maceration, a method that ferments the berries with their skins and stems. This imparts extra tannins and structure, allowing the wine to age gracefully for years, sometimes decades.

We're excited to offer an exceptional selection of South African Pinot Noirs. Whether you’re a seasoned Pinot lover or a newcomer to this distinctive grape, here are some of the finest South African expressions worth exploring:

  1. Apogee by La Vierge – The wine shows the dark fruit expression of dark plum, cherry and violet aromas. There is a typical Hemel-en- Aarde savoury and spice expression of cloves, cracked black pepper and coriander seed. It has a well textured palate and vibrant acidity which balances the front palate fruit weight. The oak is supportive on the palate and helps carry the finish of soft forest floor and spicy notes.

  2. La Brune – This wine embodies the best of Elgin’s cool-climate terroir: vivid tart cherry notes, savory undertones, and a subtle earthy complexity, all balanced by a chalky minerality that lingers on the palate.

  3. Oak Valley – The Groenlandberg Pinot Noir is sourced from a selection of south-facing vineyards situated between 430m and 470m above sea level. There is minimal intervention in the cellar. Whole-bunch fermentations, gentle punch downs and a careful approach to oak maturation, create a delicate Pinot that expresses wonderful fruit and a strong sense of place.

  4. Bouchard Finlayson – An open and expressive vintage, the wine delivers arresting fragrances of floral and exotic spice aromas. The opulent and rich core underlay vibrant dried cranberry, black cherry and a burst of plum flavours. Umami detail reappear throughout. Well structured, but smooth as silk, displaying freshness and energy for an excellent balance. Best from release until 2027.

  5. Boschendal – Translucent ruby with a youthful strawberry edge. An  intricately  structured  wine  with  a  delicate  entry,  blossoming  into  a  poised  concentration  of  wild  berry  flavours  and  oak  spice.  Gains  complexity and richness before ending with a long, finely textured finish. Drinking well already, yet promises greater integration and intrigue for up to 10 years from vintage.
